The crew went on a trip.  Oh yes we did.  Deb, Tony, John, Ron, Carol and I all decided in a moment of weakness to join up with the Freedom Riders in Pennsylvania.  We left Charlotte Thursday morning, and a short 10 hours later we arrived in Lewisburg, PA.  We were greeted by Kevin Bittenbender and his team at Kevin’s home where we were served some of the best food and memories of growing up in the great white north.  Antipasto, BBQ meat with red sauce, a bean salad……  mmmmmm memories.  All of this topped off by adult beverages and lots of friendship.

It was wonderful!  We all got a chance to play in the yard (20 acres) with the beast of a trike that was graciously loaned by Tom from Trident Trikes http://tridenttrikes.com.  It was a hit, and the assist motor made the grass and rough terrain easy to navigate.  (Terrain is also the model of the trike).
Up the hill with a bit of a push
Friday started with a slight overcast but very mild temps.  Once organized, we set out from the park in Lewisburg on our 30-ish mile trek.  Kevin had assured us that it was pretty flat.  Well, we quickly found out that Pennsylvania Pretty Flat is not NC Pretty Flat.  My butt was kicked.  As a matter of fact the only one getting along well was Carol in the van crocheting away on her huge purple afghan.  By mid-day the battery and Deb had died on the trike (I did not fully charge it, my bad), and the weather was closing in.  A decision was made to cut the ride to the 20+ miles we had and get out of the weather that was just starting to drop from the sky when we hit the park.  A retreat to the nearest food joint to share lies and encourage great exploits was called for.
Saturday was scheduled to be a short 10 mile (except for the 1+ mile hill)ride into Lewisburg and onto the parade where we led the whole thing.  Tony hit the bottom of the hill on the hand crank and never stopped.  Everyone got involved in pushing, encouraging, and just generally supporting his efforts.  Tony was a stud on Saturday and I hope he is as proud of himself as we are of him and hiss never stop attitude.
Freedom Bike Ride Team 2016
Since we were the first on the parade route when we finished we parked our bikes, and watched the crowd go by.  It was an amazing sight with everything I could think of in the parade.  They even had 5 full sized helicopters from the NC Vietnam War Helicopter Pilot’s Association.  Impressive and then some.  The parade was followed by a concert in some wonderful presentations in the park.  This was a great way to celebrate the birth of our nation and when the riding and great friends were added this week end was a bucket list event for the HTW Team.  Thanks to Kevin for inviting us and thanks to the city of Lewisburg for the celebration.
